ABS light on

Can I keep driving?

Brakes still work; the anti-lock function does not. Increase following distance, avoid hard braking, and book a bay before the next inspection.

Do this first

  1. Which light is it, tractor or trailer? They are separate systems with separate lights. The trailer ABS lamp sits on the trailer, usually on the left rear corner, and on newer tractors it also shows on the dash. A trailer light that comes on only when a particular trailer is hooked is that trailer's problem.
  2. Did it light up at startup and stay on, or come on while rolling? At startup the light should come on for a self-test and go out as you roll. Staying on after the self-test is a stored fault. Coming on at speed is a live one, often a wheel-speed sensor that has lost its signal.
  3. Look at the obvious wheel ends. A wheel-speed sensor gets pushed back by a hub that was serviced, a bearing that is loose, or debris. A sensor with its wire chafed or pulled is visible from the ground. Note which wheel if you can see it; it saves the shop a lap around the truck.

What it usually costs and how long it takes

ABS faults are mostly small, cheap parts that take time to find:

  • Wheel-speed sensor. The most common cause. Sometimes it only needs to be pushed back into contact with the tone ring; sometimes it is replaced. A short job once the wheel is identified.
  • Wiring or connector. The second most common, and the one that takes the longest to find. Chafed harnesses, corroded trailer connectors, and the seven-pin plug between tractor and trailer account for most trailer ABS lights.
  • Modulator valve or ECU. Less common and more expensive. Usually a shop job because it needs the brake-system software to confirm.

A mobile tech can clear a sensor or a plug on the road. A trailer that keeps lighting up with every tractor needs a bay.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an ABS light put me out of service?

An ABS malfunction lamp on its own is a defect, not an out-of-service condition, under the roadside inspection criteria used in North America. It will be written up, it counts against the carrier, and a trailer ABS lamp is one of the most frequently cited items. An inspector who finds the lamp will look harder at the rest of the brakes.

The trailer ABS light comes on with my tractor but not with others.

Then the fault is most likely in the tractor-side wiring, the seven-pin plug, or the power supply the tractor sends to the trailer. Clean the plug first; corrosion there is common and cheap to fix.

Does the light affect my stopping distance?

On dry pavement with a straight, controlled stop, very little. On wet, icy or loose surfaces, or in a panic stop, the difference is the wheels locking and the trailer stepping out. Drive as if the wheels can lock, because they can.

Can I just disconnect the lamp?

No. The lamp is required equipment on trucks and trailers built with ABS, and a disconnected or burned-out lamp is itself a defect. It also leaves you not knowing whether the system is working.

Why did it come on after a brake job?

The wheel-speed sensor sits in the hub and is easy to disturb during drum, shoe or bearing work. It often just needs to be pushed back into contact with the tone ring. Call the shop that did the work first.

Is it the same system as traction or stability control?

They share the sensors and the ECU. An ABS light on a newer tractor often disables stability control too, which matters more on a loaded trailer in a curve than most drivers expect.
