  Took a truck for an oil, fuel, and water separator change. Mechanic changing fuel/water separator forgot to do the gasket. The truck would barely start and then die within seconds... Not a biggie, mistakes happen. They diagnosed the issue and fixed it in about half an hour. In the process—forgetting to put my fuel tank cap back on after bypassing the tank during diagnostics. I guess my bad for not checking if it's on and spilling my fuel all over the road. All this tripped check engine light while I was there. Kindly asked them to reset it. Told me it would go away by itself. After insisting on resetting—they said it wasn't their fault, that the light was on before I came there (it wasn't), and that they would charge me for resetting. The light was on for the low NOx amount in the exhaust, which is what happens when engine dies without diesel, no diesel to burn—no NOx produced. Two mechanics told me straight in the face that NOx is produced by the DEF fluid and has nothing to do with the engine dying because of the fuel system, and overall that they are mechanics and know better than me. I asked them to show me the timestamp when the light came on, they said they would charge me to show me that... Eventually they connected to a truck and told me that there is no check engine light (while I was looking at the dashboard showing me the check engine and the error code). After some fumbling around they eventually found the code and erased it (for free can you imagine?!). Amazing experience. Wikipedia—NOx are nitrogen oxides, which are harmful gases produced during the combustion of diesel fuel. (I guess they skipped that class in college) P.S. checking in to do oil and filters service at 7am, all done by 4pm. Speedy service what can I say.
