Trucker Spotlight - Demetrick Simms
The Trucker Spotlight series explores the lives of truckers and their journey to make a difference in their industry. We interview different truck drivers to understand some life lessons that make them who they are today. We also learn more about their motivations, and the problems that they encounter on the job. We also tackle how Trucker Path's solutions helped them with what they do. The information that they provide helps inform other people who are looking to delve into the trucking world.

Today we are putting the spotlight on Demetrick Simms, also known as "Slim". He's been driving for around 5 years now. He has 3 kids and is currently engaged and getting married in 2021. He's also an American bully breeder & a Madden gamer as well. Let's get to more about Demetrick and how he got into the trucking world.

What made you decide to be a trucker?
I decided to become a trucker first to try something new and see new things. I then realized how good of a trucker I am & also I help the economy as well because trucking is a service.

In the years that you have been driving, what are the significant changes that you've noticed in the trucking industry?
In the time I’ve been driving I’ve noticed a lot has changed especially becoming a owner operator. The trucking industry has changed tremendously and is growing rapidly. As well as fleets increasing. I love it.

What made you decide to put up your Youtube channel?
I decided to start a YouTube channel because I remember when I decided to become a owner operator I had lots of questions. Some you tubers were helpful. So I decided that I would start a channel to not only help new comers but share my journey as well. So far so good.

Any times when you get lonely while driving? How do you deal with it?
I can honestly say I don’t really get lonely on the road. I have a great support system and also ride with my 4 month old American bully puppy who keeps me busy and is great company.

As a trucker, what are the current struggles in this COVID19 pandemic?
Since COVID19, I’ve noticed changes in the industry. Not too much has really affected me. It’s just a lot being on high alert wearing a mask staying sanitized and hoping others do the same. For the most part it’s manageable.

What's your favorite Truck Brand / Model?
My favorite truck/brand has to be the Peterbilt all makes years and models. I’m a fan. Big fan.

Aside from being a trucker, any other things you dream of doing?
Besides trucking, I intend on growing my gaming & breeding platform. I have many hustles and talents.

What's the best truck stop for you?
My favorite truck stop is Flying J/Pilot

What are the common troubles or problems you encounter while trucking?
My biggest issue with trucking now would be with brokers. Seems like the lack of training is common these days.

What are your pet peeves while driving/trucking?
My pet peeves has got to be texting and driving. It’s extremely dangerous. Extremely. And it frustrates me to see drivers especially truckers doing it.

We're glad that you use the Trucker Path app on your day to day trucking. What features do you enjoy the most?
The entire Trucker Path app itself is a lifesaver. But if I had to narrow it down to one I would say the truck stop feature. It gives you detailed information which is very important when pre planning a trip.

What are some tips that you would like to share for aspiring truckers?
All I have to say is believe in yourself. Take care of yourself and always think of others around you. Last but not least, take it one mile at a time.

Where can people watch your videos on Youtube?
They can view my videos on my Youtube Channel, Truck N Slim.

Hope you guys enjoy!

By Aldous Aldwin

Truckers Sentiments on Updated HOS Rules
[p]As the new HOS Rules have been updated, Trucker Path users have brought in mixed comments via it’s in-app forum. Here are some of the comments we gathered from our users. [/p]

[p]Some users welcomed the idea, like DANZ63. He said “Experiencing the new 30 minute break allowed including the on time duty into it. Honestly, the 30 minute break should be removed completely because it’s really no break at all because it completes the break while I didnt even intend to take a break. Also my pre trip doesn’t even start my day, which can actually be beneficial.”[/p] [p]User, Tachyon said that “This benefits owner operators and fleet owners by giving them greater flexibility. The seventy hour clock should have increased to allow employees the opportunity to make more money to justify the additional fatigue this is likely to cause.”[/p] [p]“I think it’s a good change and the first in a decade that will actually mitigate driving fatigue. Forcing a driver to take 10 hrs in one sitting does not necessarily reduce his fatigue. Everyone is different. A full 10 hours make me more tired sometimes!” said user Tarzammond.[/p] [p]All good, said user Shuttleman. “I’m good with it. I’ve been doing ELD’s. For 15 years I did all the whining back then and didn't do any good so I just got used to it, worked with it. Just hang in there a few years, all of this will be water under the bridge and life will go on.”[/p] [p]While there is a mix of feedback. The common denominator is the request to remove the 14-hour rule altogether. [/p] [p]“Glad to see the first step in a good direction, but the 14hr day is a huge hindrance. Like when last week, I spent 5.5hrs waiting to get loaded just chipped away at my drive time. Extended delivery to another day, turning 2-day delivery into 3 days.” Another one stated.[/p] [p]8sEx4eCoSP said, “I just wish they would drop the 14-hour rule. I think that’s why there are more mistakes being made because we don’t have a long enough time to actually get a shower or take a nap or like some of us take the time out to eat right and not so much on the go. Plus some of us only need 6 to 7 hours of sleep and we’re rested. And there’s a lot of us that always take a break more than 30 minutes a day anyway if we get the chance to. But with this 14-hour rule, it hinders all of us.”[/p] [p]OpClgdA9Jc was also not in favor of the 14-hour rule. “Like with anything, it has its pros and cons. The 14-hour rule is the problem if they’re not going to get rid of it, they should at least make it 16 like in Canada.”[/p] [p]Even though one user was okay with the change, he still had something to say about the 14-hour rule. “I’m in favor of the change. But they should scrap the 14 hour rule. I mean no driver likes it and it hurts drivers on making appointments.”[/p] [p]Conclusion [/p] [p]While most of the truckers were in favor of the said changes and the added flexibility in schedule, there were also some that pointed out the need to remove the core 14-hour rule. The updated rules have been in place for more than a month now and gathering of public feedback is now over. The FMCSA has yet to give an update based on the feedback gathered but as one commentator said, life goes on.[/p]

[p]By Trucker Path[/p]

He used to be a mechanic prior to driving trucks. He always loved driving and knew he wanted a career in driving someday but for some reason, taxi driver always popped in his mind. Let's get to more about Dakota and how's life on the road.

What made you decide to be a trucker?
I have always loved big trucks and my high school girlfriend's dad is really the one that made it seem like it be a good idea and thought id like it.

In the years that you have been driving, what are the significant changes that you've noticed in the trucking industry?
Honestly, since I've started driving, I haven't seen much change.

What made you decide to put up your Youtube channel?
I wanted to show people what it was like out here - WHAT IT'S REALLY LIKE - and not what I used to watch on Youtube because that was always misleading. They never showed the things I wanted to see that I knew other people would want to see.

Any times when you get lonely while driving? How do you deal with it?
The first thing you lose as a trucker is your sanity. Once thats out of the way, the real danger comes. You begin to love the solitude and everything really comes into perspective and you see the rest of the world from the outside in. But yes, there are lonely times but you get past it when you see that pay check.

As a trucker, what are the current struggles in this COVID19 pandemic?
I haven't had any. I really adapted well I think. Sometimes, no shower and no hot food but that happens anyway in trucking. And with the roads empty when everyone was home, I turned more miles than ever. Also when everyone came back out, I've seen more wrecks in one day than I have in my entire life. Everyone forgot how to drive.

What's your favorite Truck Brand / Model?
389 Peterbilt all day.

Aside from being a trucker, any other things you dream of doing?
Being one of those tower climber. That looks fun and you still get to travel.

What's the best truck stop for you?
TA. I find them to be the best. Besides of course chrome shops lol.

What are your pet peeves while driving/trucking?
62 mph trucks in the center lane, drivers on their phone, and drivers doing a dirty 30 (30 min break on the fuel island).

We're glad that you use the Trucker Path app on your day to day trucking. What features do you enjoy the most?
What I like most about Trucker Path is finding truck stops and seeing the driver reviews. Helps find a good place to shut'er down for the night.

What are some tips that you would like to share for aspiring truckers?
Look, listen, think, get out, and look. Take your time but never be late and use common sense. It will take you a long way out here.

Where can people watch your videos on Youtube?
They can view my videos on my Youtube Channel, Life Behind The Wheel.

Hope you guys enjoy!

By Aldous Aldwin

I guess the eld mandate.

What made you decide to put up your Youtube channel?
I've been on YouTube for years. Trucker Spotlight - Chris Lee
The Trucker Spotlight series explores the lives of truckers and their journey to make a difference in their industry. We interview different truck drivers to understand some life lessons that make them who they are today. We also learn more about their motivations, and the problems that they encounter on the job. He's originally from Michigan, but has been in Texas for so long that he considers himself a Texan already. He's been married for two years and has a 10 year-old son. He decided to live his life on a vegan/plant-based diet due to trucking. Let's get to more about Chris and how trucking changed his life.

What made you decide to be a trucker?
I became a trucker because it had been something I had wanted to do years before I took the leap. I had been deterred and so I started a moving company. After doing that for a couple of years my wife then girlfriend at the time brought it up and I couldn't say no to the opportunity a second time.

In the years that you have been driving, what are the significant changes that you've noticed in the trucking industry?
In the short amount of time that I have been in the trucking industry, I've seen electronic logs come and paper logs go, I have also seen two major changes to the hours of service.

What made you decide to put up your Youtube channel?
I had also wanted to make Youtube videos for a while. I would make content about moving and I just wasn't confident enough nor did I understand how to upload videos onto the internet. When I got into trucking I wanted to put out information that I didn't have that I thought would help others looking to get into the industry.

Any times when you get lonely while driving? How do you deal with it?
When I drove OTR, it definitely got lonely so having people to talk to back at home really helped out a lot. Being able to have a support group via Youtube also keeps me from feeling like I'm out here by myself.

As a trucker, what are the current struggles in this COVID19 pandemic?
The pandemic hasn't really affected my day to day operations. Shippers now require a covid form to be filled out for drivers entering their facility and may also take out temperature but that is about it.

What are your usual routes? Favorite scenic truck route?
I'm currently on a flatbed dedicated route so my sights are pretty routine, but when I was OTR my favorite places to drive were Nevada and Utah.

What was your weirdest or most unusual haul?
Once I was hauling a load of livers and was asked at the receiver if I ate them. I told her no and she then asked why would I have them in my truck then.

How often do you use rest stops / truck stops? What are the things that you look for in a truck stop? Favorite truck stop meal?
I use rest stops and truck stops 99 percent of the time unless I can stay at a shipper or receiver overnight. When looking for a truck stop, I often check how many spots they may have, if they have showers, and the type of food they serve. I normally bring my own food from home to eat in the truck, but if I had to choose, I would say Indian food. I've been to a couple truck stops that serve that type of food while driving OTR.

What are the common troubles or problems you encounter while trucking?
The most common troubles or problems I encounter out on the road are other drivers, mostly the smaller vehicles cutting in front of big trucks.

What are your pet peeves while driving/trucking?
My biggest pet peeve about trucking is not having a shower or restroom in the truck. That would save me lots of time.

We're glad that you use the Trucker Path app on your day to day trucking. What features do you enjoy the most?
My favorite features to use on Trucker Path are the fuel price feature, knowing how far each rest stop/truck stop are from my location, knowing if weigh stations are open or closed, being able to route my trip in the app. Honestly there are so many things to like about the app because it's catered to truckers and I definitely appreciate that.

What are some tips that you would like to share for aspiring truckers?
Always do your pre-trip before getting on the road is tip number one! Another tip I would share is to learn how to save and invest your money so that your future self can appreciate your hard work.

Where can people watch your videos on Youtube?
They can view my videos on my Youtube Channel, ChrisLeeTV.

Hope you guys enjoy!

By Aldous Aldwin

Trucker Spotlight - Matthew Garnett
The Trucker Spotlight series explores the lives of truckers and their journey to make a difference in their industry. We interview different truck drivers to understand some life lessons that make them who they are today. We also learn more about their motivations, and the problems that they encounter on the job. We also tackle how Trucker Path's solutions helped them with what they do. The information that they provide helps inform other people who are looking to delve into the trucking world.

Today we are putting the spotlight on Matthew Garnett, who's been driving for around 10 years now. Trucking is his 3rd career and he was previously a pastor and a front man for a rock band. Let's get to know more about Matt and how his path made its way into trucking.

What made you decide to be a trucker?
Driving trucks was a childhood dream of mine. But of course when I grew up as a teen, the expectation was to go to college and “get a real job". It was only when I was at my wits end with “real jobs", that I decided to pursue this age old dream. Let me say this, driving trucks is the most fulfilling thing I’ve ever done. It was the best decision I’ve ever made. The only regret I have is that I didn’t go into trucking sooner!

In the years that you have been driving, what are the significant changes that you've noticed in the trucking industry?
The biggest thing is the change in the Hours of Service regulations. It seems like this is something Uncle Sam can’t settle on. Every time we turn around, it seems like the noose tightens more. I wrote an article for TheFederalist as well as interviewed on Fox and Friends about this issue.

The bottom line is, it makes us truckers hurry more instead of keeping the motoring public safe.

What made you decide to put up your Youtube channel?
Trucking companies do their best to train drivers but unfortunately there’s nothing better than on the ground experience. I only wish I had some open deck trucking vet showing me the basics of things via a first person camera. Put simply, there was a lot that I didn’t get in training that I had to learn the hard way. Why should guys have to learn the hard way when I can show them via my own personal experience on a Youtube channel?

Any times when you get lonely while driving? How do you deal with it?
No doubt. You’re not going to avoid that. The way I deal with it is constantly occupying my mind. Each day, I have a plan to learn something new each. I have a plan to listen to radio stations and podcasts that will motivate me to keep trucking. One thing I have found very helpful is to listen to podcasts that feature our war fighters. Listening to those men talk about how they’ve defended my freedom to drive trucks gets me through those rough times.

As a trucker, what are the current struggles in this COVID19 pandemic?
It’s been good for us truckers. The biggest “struggle” has been being required to wear a mask when at shippers and receivers. It’s been a wise move to deem us as “essential”. We’ll throw the rest of you on our backs and get the economy back to normal.

Incidentally, I was on Fox Business News with Neil Cavuto discussing this topic.

What are your usual routes? Favorite scenic truck route?
One of the most beautiful routes is I40 out of the Carolinas into Tennessee. The fact you have to shift a lot there is overcome by the beauty of those Smokies! As of late, I’m stuck in the Midwest running regional. But still, some loads put me right on Lake Michigan. A lot of loads put me in the middle of corn fields. Sure I love the spectacular scenery, but looking at acres and acres of corn still inspires me. The rows are perfectly straight. Some farmer took the time to make that happen and I love it.

What was your weirdest or most unusual haul?
I’ve hauled a lot of strange and irregular stuff running open deck, but the one that sticks out to me is a haul I did when I was training with my veteran teacher, Gary. Gary and I got a run picking up on a farm in the middle of nowhere Nebraska. Honestly, we thought we were lost on the way to the pickup. We were on a narrow dirt road and both of us thought, “This can’t be right……”. Turns out we were picking up a load of potatoes from a small farmer to deliver to Kansas City. It was a unique loading process into our dry van. The unloading was even more amazing. There, we had to detach from the trailer and watch as a gigantic crane and conveyer picked up our trailer into mid-air and emptied it out like a giant emptying out a can of soup! To be sure, if wasn’t hooked on trucking before then, I knew this is what I wanted to do.

How often do you use rest stops / truck stops? What are the things that you look for in a truck stop? Favorite truck stop meal?
Truck stops are a part of the life unless you’re a home daily driver. Being a regional driver, I know the best places to stop for the stuff I’m looking for which is two things: water and coffee. I’ve found that it pays to have your own food and a way to cook it (microwave) already on board. You want to be as self contained as possible. Still, I treat myself to a triple cheeseburger with fries once a week. Don’t do that everyday. But still, you’ve got to give yourself a break! Find a spot to get that sammich!

What are the common troubles or problems you encounter while trucking?
Driving flatbed means you’re going to get into pickles. You’re going to roll into construction sites that are tight and where you most likely will get stuck…..like stuck where the crane man has to pull you out. Biggest thing is, don’t panic. Take your time and don’t tear up your equipment no matter what. Also, weight is both a blessing and a curse. Weight / over-dimension and miles is big bucks. But if you get popped for being overweight on an axel, that big money now goes to Uncle Sam. Make sure you know how to axel out your truck and run legally.

What are your pet peeves while driving/trucking?
My Number One pet peeve is that Four-Wheelers do not know how to merge onto interstates! Don’t give them the time of day. It’s not my responsibility to help them merge. If you don’t know how to merge, sell your car and take the bus! You have a brake and an accelerator. Either go ahead of me on the ramp or drop back. I ain’t changing lanes for you unless it’s in my interest to do so.

We're glad that you use the Trucker Path app on your day to day trucking. What features do you enjoy the most?
The Trucker Path app is fantastic. It tells me first and foremost if a truck scale is open or closed. Also, the parking feature is very accurate. It’s a Google maps for truckers.

What are some tips that you would like to share for aspiring truckers?
Do not let your pride get you into an accident. If you’re not sure, don’t do it. Yeah some jackasses might try to make fun of you, but pay them no mind. Always ask questions. The worst drivers are those who act like they know it all. Make it your goal that once you’re driving 50 years you’re still willing to learn and ask questions.

Where can people watch your videos on Youtube?
They can view my videos on my Youtube Channel, Trucker Hacks.

Hope you guys enjoy!

By Aldous Aldwin

Trucker Spotlight - Cindy Moore
The Trucker Spotlight series explores the lives of truckers and their journey to make a difference in their industry. We interview different truck drivers to understand some life lessons that make them who they are today. We also learn more about their motivations, and the problems that they encounter on the job. We also tackle how Trucker Path's solutions helped them with what they do. The information that they provide helps inform other people who are looking to delve into the trucking world.

Today we are putting the spotlight on Cindy, who's been driving for around 12 years. She's also called The Flatbed Chick on Youtube where she shares her trucking adventures. Let's get to know more about Cindy and how it's like being on the road.

What made you decide to be a trucker?
I became a truck driver out of necessity. I was going through a divorce and needed a steady stream of income and a job that paid enough to support myself without any help and I kept reading about how there was no gender gap in trucking they said a woman could make just as much money as a man. I decided to try it for a couple of years until I could find something better at home and as you can see I never found anything, I’ve been here for almost 12 years.

What were some challenges that you faced when you started out trucking?
The hardest part for me was getting used to public showers. I know it sounds crazy but it was almost traumatizing to think that every time I needed a shower I would have to use a public space. The other big thing was getting used to backing that 53’ foot trailer, it was very intimidating.

In the years that you've been driving, what are the significant changes that you've noticed in the trucking industry?
The biggest thing I’ve noticed is a lot more traffic on the road and it seems like instead of creating more parking for trucks they are closing rest areas and making it harder to find parking. Don’t even get me started on hours of service, they don’t want to ever leave that alone and I’m sure they will continue to change in the future searching for perfection, but we as drivers are a very diverse group and we will never have the same needs. They will never come up with rules that will fit everybody, you may need five hours of sleep and I may need 10.

Any times when you get lonely while driving? How do you deal with it?
Being on the road for weeks at a time by yourself does get very lonely at times but I have friends to talk to and a few years ago I got a dog to ride with me. She's great companion and brought a lot of joy to my life.

What made you start a Youtube Channel?
I started my channel because I absolutely fell in love with this beautiful country we live in and none of my family or friends seem to be as interested in it as I was, so I thought there has to be people out there like me who would love to see the country. Before I became a truck driver I had only seen about three other surrounding states and I had no idea how much I had missed all those years.

What keeps you busy nowadays? How did the current Covid-19 situation affect your trucking life?
I’m currently pulling a dry van and trying to stay busy. I still love the flatbed and plan on going back in the future but I’m gonna be trying some other things for now. Covid-19 made it difficult to find a job after the contract ended early in Alaska. A lot of the places I called were either not hiring because of Covid-19 or trying to figure out how to do orientation and putting it off for a few weeks.

What are your trucking pet peeves?
My biggest pet peeve is rude and aggressive drivers who seem to not value the lives of other people. For example, cars that pass me on the right after I’ve gotten into the left lane because there’s a tow truck on the right shoulder.

What are your future career plans? Would you continue to be a trucker? Any plans on being an instructor?
My dream for the past several years has been to get an RV and become a travel blogger or full-time RVer, LOL! I still love seeing the country that is the best part of my job and when I retire from trucking I can’t imagine sitting still. I would still want to travel so I think that would be the perfect place for me. I’ve had people suggest that I become a trainer or an instructor at a CDL school but I’m really not sure I would enjoy that because that means I wouldn’t be able to travel anymore.

What is your favorite feature of the Trucker Path app?
My favorite feature on Trucker Path is truck-stop reporting I really love knowing what the truck-stop is gonna look like when I get there and if it’s usually full at a certain time then I know that I need a back up plan.

Favorite Truck-stop? Truck-stop Food?
My favorite truck-stops are the ones that are usually off the beaten path and I love discovering new places to park and new places to eat.

What are your must haves or the things that you bring with you when on the road
I guess a very popular favorite among truck drivers is also one of my favorites which is baby wipes. I also make sure I have bottled water, soap, and towels just in case. I wouldn’t ever want to be in the truck without my truckers Atlas and a CB either.

What's your favorite scenic route?
I’m not sure if I really have a favorite scenic route but Highway 20 through Oregon is at the top of my list. I also love Highway 89 and 191 going down through Utah south into Colorado and there are so many beautiful places out there I can’t even think of all of them off the top of my head. Maybe I should start making a list.

What are some tips that you would like to share for aspiring women truckers?
I guess the biggest advice I would have for women that are thinking about getting into this industry is don’t be intimidated by it, if it’s what you truly want to do then follow your heart.

Where can people watch your videos on Youtube?
They can view my videos on my Youtube Channel,The Flatbed Chick.

Got a cool story to share?
